Assessing The Cost of Dental Procedures Not Covered in Senior Dental Insurance

July 25, 2023

Oral health relies on preventive care, early detection of dental problems, and routine dental check-ups. Unfortunately, Medicare Dental does not cover most dental services, which means seniors have to bear the out-of-pocket expenses themselves. This can be a burden for those living on a fixed income. However, there are some dental services that are covered by Medicare, and in this article, we will explain everything you need to know about Medicare Dental.

Medicare Dental is not a separate plan. Instead, it falls under Medicare Part A and Part B (Original Medicare). Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care, hospice care, skilled nursing facilities, and some home health care. However, it does not cover routine dental care, such as cleanings, fillings, or extractions.

On the other hand, Medicare Part B covers some dental services as long as they are medically necessary. For example, if a senior needs a tooth extraction before radiation treatment, Medicare Part B will cover the surgical extraction. Similarly, if a person needs a dental examination before heart surgery, Medicare Part B will generally cover it. However, this coverage is limited to medically necessary procedures only.

Dental prostheses, such as dentures, are also covered by Medicare Part A or Part B if they are medically necessary. For example, if a person loses their teeth due to a medical condition, like oral cancer, Medicare will cover all or part of the cost of dentures. However, Medicare will not cover the cost of dentures if a person simply needs them for cosmetic reasons.

Some Medicare Advantage (MA) plans offer dental coverage as an extra benefit. MA plans are also known as Medicare Part C, and they are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans must provide the same level of coverage as Original Medicare, but they often offer additional benefits, like dental coverage.

However, not all MA plans cover dental services, and those that do may offer different types of dental coverage. Some MA plans only cover preventive care, such as cleanings and X-rays, while others also cover major procedures like root canals and crowns. It’s crucial to read and understand the plan’s dental coverage before enrolling in an MA plan.

In conclusion, Medicare Dental coverage is limited, but it covers medically necessary dental services and dental prostheses like dentures. Supplementary coverage is offered by some Medicare Advantage plans, but there are differences in dental coverage between various plans. Therefore, it’s important to research and find a plan that offers the desired level of dental coverage. Additionally, seniors should maintain good oral health and schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings. Preventive care can help identify dental issues early on and reduce the need for more extensive and expensive dental work.

By taking advantage of the dental coverage available through Medicare and supplemental plans, seniors can keep their smiles healthy and bright. Furthermore, they should take steps to keep their mouths clean by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily. Eating healthy foods that are low in sugar and visiting the dentist regularly will ensure good oral health throughout life. Finally, seniors should also consider using a mouthwash or rinsing with an antimicrobial solution to reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.

With the right dental plan, regular preventive care, and healthy habits, seniors can maintain good oral health into their golden years. Taking advantage of all that Medicare has to offer will ensure smiles stay bright for years to come!

In addition to providing dental coverage, Medicare also offers a range of other benefits for seniors. These include vision and hearing care, nursing services, physical therapy, home health care, hospital stays, doctor visits and more. It’s important for seniors to understand the full range of their benefits so they can get the most out of their Medicare coverage. When researching plans and coverage, seniors should consider their individual needs and lifestyle to find the best plan for them.
